First things first, I imported my custom heightmap and used the default settings. I still need to do some research and find out if I need to change the dimensions of my heightmap to be a square in order to increase performance and or correctness in this import step. Also, I need to investigate how to set the scaling dimensions when mapping pixels in my heightmap to posts on the UE4 landscape grid in order to achieve a correct scaling. Image below was taken right after the import step with the default settings and depicts the imported Landscape 'naked'.
- For the color gradient texture sampling technique, I want to create better texture and see if its possible to encode a grassy look for the greens, a muddy look for the browns, a snowy look for the whites, add some noise, etc.
- For the height normalizing technique, I want to also explore using the slope information of the pixel for assigning colors. This could prevent snow on cliffs and the like.
- For the weight based layer blending technique, I want to increase the amounts of layers used and also improve the quality of each layer by adding normals, noise, etc. Also, I want to create a better weight texture that smoothly interpolates between the weights.
- Play around with the Metallic, Roughness, Specular, and Ambient Occlusion inputs of the material.
- Stay tuned!
